Dedicated Hunter

Dedicated Hunter / Sport Shooter Status: means that you have completed one or other qualifying evaluation with your hunting and or Sport shooting association which places you in this category. The advantage is that you can own more than 4 firearms (Semi – Automatic or Manual Action) Important for the serious hunter and have more than 200 rounds ammunition per firearm that is licensed in your name (For the clay target shooting enthusiast this is important as it is for the wingshooter)

Dedicated Hunter / Sport Shooter Status gives you a little higher status when you apply for a firearms licence, as the status denotes that you are a dedicated firearms user and that you probably are better with safety and handling of the firearm - also that you can act safely with a firearm in the presence of others. Different associations have different criteria to award their members this status.

Note: The status is associated with the Firearms Control Act (60 of 2000 as amended). It is the NSA's policy to make the achievement of this status as easy as possible, while also making it of such a standard that the SAPS and other hunting associations in the country will be satisfied with the standard set for the evaluation (see purpose of dedicated hunter training). It is not the NSA's intention to institute "hunting control" with this status but rather to ascertain that it's dedicated members are safe and trustworthy firearm owners and users.

One of the corner stones of learner and certification systems world-wide is that prior learning and embedded expertise be recognised formally. This is dependent on documentary evidence because of legal liabilities associated with Dedicated Hunter certification by NSA. Accordingly, recognition of prior learning (RPL) will be exercised in the following cases and the members will thus be certified as Dedicated Hunters in terms of the requirements of the Firearms Control Act:
  • Bona fide Hunter Certificate issued by the South African Police Service in terms of the previous Arms and Ammunition Act of 1969.
  • Proof of successful completion of the CHASA Hunters Proficiency Test with practical shooting test.
  • Professional Hunters qualification certificate issued by an officially recognised PH training organisation or any Provincial Authority in South Africa.
  • Current and valid Dedicated Hunter certificate issued by the SA Wingshooters Association, the SA Hunters and Game Conservation Association, the Confederation of Hunters? Associations of South Africa (CHASA), or any other hunting association that is accredited with the SAPS(CFR).
  • Hunter/s licence or Certificate formally issued by the EU government agencies (e.g. German Jagdschein or French Hunter/s Licence).
In cases where individuals can clearly demonstrate expertise and long-standing experience in hunting, NSA may, after personal interviews and after having received certified declarations by individuals who are in the know of such an individual's prowess as a hunter, and knowledge of hunting in general; and after having appointed assessors to assess the person's claim, and subject to the NSA's Executive Council?s decision; issue a Dedicated Hunter Certificate to such an individual. Subject to the condition that this specific individual will be a paid-up member of the NSA in good standing and meet the requirements mentioned under Learning assumed to be in place.
