Training Criteria to Qualify for, and Maintain, Dedicated Hunter/Sport shooter Status (Rifles & Handguns)

Training Criteria to Qualify for, and Maintain, Dedicated Hunter/Sport shooter Status

The NSA can award Dedicated Hunter as well as Dedicated Sport-shooter Status to it's Dedicated Members as it is accredited with the SAPS (Central Firearms Registry) as a Hunting Association and as a Sport-shooting Association.

However, the criteria which the NSA uses for awarding either of the statuses must conform with stipulations in the FCA and Regulations.

In both instances members that want to enrol for the course to be evaluated for either or both dedicated statuses must complete a theoretical and practical evaluation.

This is done by enrolling for the course with the office (contact admin@natshoot.co.za) and indicating whether you want the course material on CD or in printed manual format. The course study material is then posted to you and when you are ready to do the theoretical evaluation you contact the office on 012-343-3236 where you will be instructed as to how the theoretical evaluation works. Theoretical evaluations can only be done electronically via email.

For the practical in both instances (dedicated hunter and or sport-shooter) you download the relevant target for the rifle or handgun you want to use and shoot the required table as indicated in the step-by-step guide for handguns or rifles – see the “postal rifle” and the “postal handguns” pages on the website. You have to score 50% to pass the practical evaluation.

Recognition of Prior Learning

One of the corner stones of learner and certification systems world-wide is that prior learning and embedded expertise be recognised formally. This is dependent on documentary evidence because of legal liabilities associated with Dedicated Hunter or Sport-shooter certification by NSA. Accordingly, recognition of prior learning (RPL) will be exercised in the following cases and the members will thus be certified as Dedicated Hunters and or Sport-shooters in terms of the requirements of the Firearms Control Act:
  1. Bona fide Hunter and or Sport-shooter Certificate issued by the South African Police Service in terms of the previous Arms and Ammunition Act of 1969.
  2. Proof of successful completion of the CHASA Hunters Proficiency Test with practical shooting test (for dedicated hunter qualification).
  3. Professional Hunters qualification certificate issued by an officially recognised PH training organisation or any Provincial Authority in South Africa (for dedicated hunter qualification).
  4. Current and valid Dedicated Hunter certificate issued by the SA Wingshooters Association, the SA Hunters and Game Conservation Association, the Confederation of Hunters Associations of South Africa (CHASA), or any other hunting association that is accredited with the SAPS(CFR) (for dedicated hunter qualification).
  5. Hunter’s licence or Certificate formally issued by the EU government agencies (e.g. German Jagdschein or French Hunters’ Licence) (for dedicated hunter qualification).
  6. Current and valid Dedicated Sport-shooter certificate issued by any of the accredited sport-shooting associations, or an equivalent international qualification after scrutiny by the NSA Exco (for dedicated sport-shooter qualification).
