Membership
By joining the NSA, you join an Africa-based hunting and sport-shooting association, which is apolitical, non-racist, and non-sexist, while internationally linked. The NSA has no focussed interest in only one or other income group, one or other population group, or one or other culture group. NSA-people are fellow hunters, fellow sport-shooters and fellow responsible firearm owners. NSA-people want to be responsible citizens in complying with the stipulations of the Firearms Control Act (2000), and want to maintain the right to possess firearms, and use them in a responsible and accountable manner.
Membership of a SAPS accredited hunting or sport-shooting association is not a requirement of the new Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000 as amended) in order to legally own firearms in South Africa. It is, however, very clear that membership of such an association is to the advantage of any person who applies for a firearm licence - whether you are a "one-gun-owner" or have a number of firearms. Membership of such an association implies that you are serious about firearm ownership and that you take time to practice firearm use. It also says that the individual is probably more safe and responsible around firearms than an individual who merely holds his/her firearm in a safe for possible use on one occasion.

Occasional and/or dedicated participation in the NSA postal handgun and hunting rifle competition means that you can apply to licence your handgun as an occasional sport-shooter (not only for self-defence); and your sport-shooting rifles for sport-shooting (not only for hunting).
We assist our members with examples of motivations for all instances of firearm use.
This is what we do for you:
- The NSA is accredited with the SAPS (Central Firearms Registry) as a Hunting Association (FAR nr. 1300050) and as a Sport-Shooting Association (FAR nr. 1300088). This makes your membership worthwhile in terms of application for firearm licences.
- Assistance with firearm licensing applications is free of charge for members to ascertain that their applications are correctly motivated and completed with correct annexures and proof of statements (same with the endorsements we issue for firearm licence applications of our members).
- The NSA is by virtue of it's accreditation with the SAPS as a Hunting Association and as a Sport-shooting Association, part of the SA Hunters' Forum, and of the Hunters-SAPS Consultative Forum. Both bodies consists of all accredited hunting associations and deals directly with the SAPS (CFR) at a three monthly meeting. Through NSA you thus have direct access to the law maker and implementer. As a unit the Hunters' Forum has influence and has access to first hand knowledge of what is happening in terms of the Firearms Control Act’s implementation (be that renewals, licensing, training, or SASSETA matters).
- NSA personnel have acted as chairperson for the Hunters Forum, and have been nominated by the Minister of Police to serve on the Task Team which investigated the implementation of the Firearms Control Act and the functioning of the Central Firearms Registry (2010).
- We liaise with Government to streamline conservation, shooting and firearms legislation in South Africa, and the Association is a permanent member of the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Wildlife Forum.
- We support conservation-based rural development, and conservation through sustainable use of natural resources in conjunction with all other like minded Hunting Associations, i.e. Lowveld Hunters, SA Wingshooters, and SA Hunters and Game Conservation Association.
- We create an umbrella under which like minded law abiding hunters, sport-shooters, and firearm owners can converge to ascertain their right to possess arms, and to be responsible and accountable in their use. Be that in sport-shooting, hunting or for self -protection.
