The Competition

  1. PURPOSE
    To offer all NSA members equal opportunity to participate and compete in a standardised National Postal Hunting Rifle Target Shooting Competition, conforming with international standards. The focus is on FUN in participation.

  2. PARTICIPATION
    Only NSA members may participate in the annually presented and nationally scored postal competitions.

  3. NATIONAL POSTAL COMPETITION
    The competition is conducted nationally by way of participants posting shot targets for competition purposes to the NSA office (PO Box 11461, Hatfield, 0028) where their scores are ratified, and where their scores are placed on a database after which their national position in the competition is logged on the Website (from there the name postal competition).

  4. THE COMPETITION
    1. NSA members can participate in any one or in all three categories of hunting rifle shooting competitions;

      (i) rimfire rifle (.22 calibre);
      (ii) medium-bore centre-fire hunting rifle (all centre-fire calibres below 9,3mm and .375);
      (iii) large-bore centre-fire hunting rifle (all centre-fire calibres from 9,3mm and .375 and larger).
    2. The rimfire, the medium-bore centre-fire, and the large-bore centre-fire rifle postals are separate competitions that may be completed at the same time (same day) by a member.
    3. Competition shoots are shot under the auspices of a Range Officer or an accompanying NSA member at any shooting range which has a rifle range of at least 25m for rimfire rifles (.22 calibre) and 100m for centre-fire medium-bore and large-bore hunting rifles. Only official NSA targets may be used ? click here
    4. After completion of the shooting round, members post their targets which have been counter signed by the Range Officer or the accompanying NSA member, to the NSA Head Office for scoring and for competition ranking (PO Box 11461, Hatfield, 0028).
    5. Members can use the rifles they legally own, ?as is? in standard retail format (with either open iron sights or with hunting telescope).
    6. It is NSA policy that competitors use support for all rifle postal shoots (any shooting position is valid), with the exception that the butt-stock may not be rested or supported on anything else than the shoulder. NSA deems it un-ethical hunting to shoot at live game animals in freehand stance, and would like to get members to practice field shooting with support on the shooting range.
    7. Members can shoot individually or they can organise local NSA groups to shoot simultaneously.

  5. DEADLINE DATES
    1. Annual competitions close on 30 November of the specific year.
    2. Targets sent to the NSA office for competition purposes with a postmark later than 30 November will not be taken into consideration for that specific year's competition, but will be kept over for the next year?s competition.
    3. An updated score sheet will be posted on the website on a monthly basis.

  6. TARGETS
    1. Members are responsible to furnish the correct targets for competition shoots themselves (examples included in document package at enrolment) (Shooting ranges are not responsible to furnish members with targets). Members may make good quality copies of the specified targets or download here
    2. ONE Target format is used for the Rimfire Rifle (.22 calibre) competition. The Target is named, Official NSA Rimfire Hunting Rifle Target.
    3. ONE Target format is used for the Centre-fire Medium-bore and Large-bore Hunting Rifle competitions. The target is named Official NSA Centre-fire Hunting Rifle Target.

    5. A shot hole, the leaded edge of which comes in contact with the outside of the bullseye or scoring rings of a target, is given the highest value.
    6. In case of keyholed or tipped shots, the higher value is awarded if the leaded edge of the bullet hole touches the scoring ring of higher value, even though the hole is elongated to the bullet's length rather than being a circle of the bullet's diameter.
    7. In case of skid shots, the higher value is awarded if the leaded edge of the bullet hole touches the scoring ring of higher value, except the value of a skid shot may not be more than one ring higher than the original point of bullet contact with the target.
