Dedicated Hunter


Purpose of NSA training:

Provided the requirements of the Firearms Control Act are met and the candidate meets the requirements for dedicated membership of the NSA, the candidate who successfully achieves this dedicated award will:
  1. Be proficient in advanced firearm safety and responsible use in the field and on the range in the company of other hunters and shooters.
  2. Qualify for certification as Dedicated Hunter / Sport-Shooter with the National Shooting Association
Specific outcomes:

The candidate will be assessed to be proficient against the following criteria, and will after completion:
  1. Have a sound knowledge of firearms safety (handgun and rifle) in general field and range conditions, and under hunting conditions in the field in the presence of other hunters and sport-shooters.
  2. Have a sound knowledge of the different handguns or rifles (or of both) and their ammunition, ballistics, firearm size for quarry size, and knowledge regarding the proper care for his/her firearm.
  3. Be a competent field and range shot while understanding the finer detail of rifle and / or handgun marksmanship, including various techniques and target and range types.
  4. Know the law and correct behaviour in the field and on the range - Laws affecting firearm use, criminal law, self defence, gun free zones, domestic violence, and public gatherings. Also of Provincial regulations re conservation, hunting, hunting seasons, and quarry identification. Sound knowledge of the NSA's General Code of Conduct, and of the NSA Firearm Safety Code.
  5. Know the basics of quarry -habitat, -conservation, basics of quarry management and utilisation.

The ultimate outcome will be that the NSA Dedicated Hunter and Sport shooter will be invited with confidence to shoot with others (in the field or on the range), and will get preference in the 5-star shooting opportunities and events arranged by the NSA from time to time.
